As the Mississippi State Bulldogs work toward Saturday’s season-opening contest against Memphis, there are questions surrounding the status of the most experienced quarterback on the roster.
Junior QB Chris Relf missed MSU’s fan day event Saturday due to what head coach Dan Mullen called a “family” issue. According to a published report, one MSU player said Relf has a finger injury. ( Read More…)

A trio of Mississippi State seniors have earned preseason honors from the coaches of the Southeastern Conference.
The three Bulldogs were picked to the second team of the All-SEC Coaches’ team, announced on Tuesday in advance of SEC Media Days.
Mississippi State is represented on the second team by senior offensive lineman Derek Sherrod, senior defensive lineman Pernell McPhee and senior linebacker K.J. Wright.
The Bulldogs finished tied with Arkansas and Auburn for fourth in the SEC West at 3-5 last season. Overall, Mississippi State ended the season at 5-7.
Defending SEC champion and national champ Alabama placed six players on the first team. Florida, which won the SEC East but fell to Alabama in the SEC championship game, landed 10 players total on the first and second teams.

The 2010 schedule for the Mississippi State Bulldogs can be divided into two parts:
Early on, plenty of home cooking. After that, a lot of time away from home.
If the Bulldogs hope to break through this season and emerge as a contender in the Southeastern Conference’s Western Division, it would behoove Mississippi State to take care of business at home early in the season. Mississippi State plays four of its first five games in Starkville, starting with back-to-back contests against Memphis on Sept. 4 and Auburn on Sept. 9. ( Read More…)

The Mississippi State Bulldogs suffered a heartbreaking loss today, missing out on a chance to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by blowing a late lead in a 75-74 overtime loss to the Kentucky Wildcats in the SEC Tournament title game.
The Bulldogs held a three-point lead with just seconds remaining, but after Kentucky guard Eric Bledsoe made the first of two free throws, he intentionally missed the second and after a wild scramble that included a game-winning 3-point attempt by John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins made a layup with 0.1 on the clock to send the game to the extra frame.
As a result, Mississippi State will now have to sweat out the selection show to find out if it has done enough to earn a bid. Many experts have said that the Bulldogs pass the eye test. But while I agree, shouldn’t their resume count for something? Or in this case, nothing. The Bulldogs have beaten no one of substance, with their two best games being LOSSES to Kentucky (both in overtime).
Mississippi State might find its way into the dance. But after an up-and-down season, not being included would be the far more likely scenario.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs fell just short in their upset bid in an 81-75 overtime loss to the No. 2 Kentucky Wildcats.
It was an intense, intimidating atmosphere in Starkville, as the crowd was fired up about the prospects of taking down a highly ranked SEC rival.
It was a strong effort from the Bulldogs despite the fact they were without their leading scorer because of discipline reasons.
Mississippi State tried to shorten the game by holding the ball until the shot clock ticked under 10 seconds, and they fired up a lot of three-pointers.
In the end, they simply didn’t have an answer for freshman sensation John Wall, who scored 18 points.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs never flirted with a possible upset in a 27-6 win over the Middle Tennessee State Red Raiders.
Mississippi State never trailed in the game, taking a 17-6 lead into halftime and shutting out the Red Raiders in the second half.
They were certainly on upset alert after watching the Red Raiders knock off the Maryland Terrapins two seasons in a row.
While Middle Tennessee State lost a lot of players from last year’s team, they have still proven pesky this year.
It was a strange sight to see a team like Mississippi State playing a small Division I school on their home turf.

Mississippi State can’t seem to stay out of the headlines this offseason. First, they signed controversial recruit Renardo Sidney, after the NCAA cleared his eligibility (despite questions about his family’s living situation while in Los Angeles).
Now, the Bulldogs center, Jarvis Varnado, was released from a north Mississippi hospital on Wednesday morning after a bevy of tests failed to determine why Varnado felt sick in the first place.
Varnado came to the hospital on Monday after he became nauseous in practice. He stayed in the hospital overnight on Monday night after doctors needed more time to complete their tests, yet further testing on Tuesday failed to show conclusive results.
University spokesman Gregg Ellis says Varnado can return to practice in “a couple of days.”
Varnado, the nation’s leading shot blocker for the past two years, led the Bulldogs to the Southeastern Conference tournament title last season and was named MVP.

The NCAA Eligibility Center has cleared Renardo Sidney, meaning he will enroll at Mississippi State on Monday just in time for the first day of classes.
On Wednesday, ESPN.com spoke with Sidney’s attorney, Donald Jackson, who said that the investigation into Sidney’s amateurism eligibility has not been resolved and could take a few months.
Sidney’s amateurism came under fire after the Los Angeles Times ran a story about how both USC and UCLA avoided recruiting Sidney, despite his prominence as a local talent.
The NCAA is investigating how the Sidney family paid monthly rent upwards of $5,000 near Fairfax High School in Los Angeles for the past two years; they moved there from Mississippi to allow Renardo to attend high school in California.
Now former USC coach Tim Floyd told The Clarion-Ledger (in Jackson, Miss.) that USC did not recruit Sidney because of their ongoing troubles regarding eligibility with former star running back Reggie Bush and former star basketball player O.J. Mayo. Both have moved onto lucrative professional contracts, yet both may have forgiven their eligibility by receiving monetary compensation in college.
This move clears the way for Mississippi State to most likely be a Top 20 team when the preseason rankings come out later this fall.
